Benjamin Thigpen

For Benjamin Thigpen music is a medium that speaks about ideas, thoughts, activities, scenes, images, conflicts. His music emerges from his thoughts on time and his feelings for poetry.

His electroacoustic compositions have been performed in concert and on radio in Europe, North and South America, Australia and New Zealand, as well as on the web. His work has been recognized in competitions such as the 1997 Prix Noroit, 1998 & 2006 Musica Nova, 2000 Métamorphoses, 2003 & 2005 CIMESP, 2002 & 2006 International Contemporary Music Contest Città di Udine, and in the 2006 Concours Internationaux de Musique et d'Art Sonore Electroacoustiques de Bourges.

His work is distributed by EMF Media, Metamkine, Capstone Records and Diffusion i Média.

He holds a BA in English Literature, an MA in Comparative Literature and a DEA in Aesthetics, Technologies and Artistic Creations (Horacio Vaggione, Université de Paris VIII). He has studied composition with Elaine Barkin, Christian Eloy, Jacques Lejeune, Curtis Roads, and Julio Estrada. After working for nearly six years as a computer music instructor at Ircam (Paris), he is currently teaching digital signal processing, acoustics and psychoacoustics at the Conservatory of Cuneo, in Italy
