How to Philosophize with a Hammer

Henry Vega

Henry Vega, born in New York City, is dedicated to the creation and promotion of electro-acoustic music. In a handful of years he has been involved as composer, teacher, technician and performer on productions of theatre, dance and concert music that focus solely on modern artistic trends. As a composer Vega has received commissions to work with choreographers, theatre directors and video artists while his devotion is focused on computer interactive performance.

In 2003 he founded 'The Electronic Hammer' trio along with Diego Espinosa and Juan Parra, a group dedicated to performing new and recent works for percussion and computers as well as challenging the medium through improvisation and spontaneous music making. More recently in 2006 he started the Spy Collective electronic music theatre and dance group in Amsterdam. This is a group that holds technological discoveries and historical awareness as central components of their creative work, always searching for the place where these two converge into our modern life. Their latest work, Iminami: from mother to smother was premiered in Salzburg and recently received a production prize in the UK.

He is the recipient of several grants including the PRS Foundation, Scheppende Toonkunst.

Henry Vega has earned degrees from the US, the Netherlands and most recently a PhD from the Sonic Arts Research Centre in Belfast while currently living in The Hague. Vega works mainly in the Netherlands with various productions and ensembles including his own.
