Jane Eyre

This collection of Nils Vigeland's music is dramatic and elegant! 'False Love / True Love' (2001) is a chamber opera in two acts based on two scenes from Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre. The work features two characters (Jane Eyre and Rochester), and consists of two pivotal scenes between these protagonists: the meeting between them immediately following their unfulfilled marriage ceremony, and their first meeting after many years of separation. Scored for a piano trio with two vocal soloists, this work treats with musical sophistication and grace the intimacy of dialogue. The musical inspirations for Vigeland's Five Nocturnes (2000) are diverse: Ives, Gershwin, Chopin and the environmental sounds of last call at an Irish pub. Three of the movements are scored for solo piano: 'A London Nocturne: Ives and Gershwin', '25'' Nocturne' and 'Samantha Smith'. 'The Parting Glass' and the final nocturne, 'Lullabye' add clarinet and violin. 'Two Days' (2001), written two days after September 11th, 2001, is Vigeland's musical reaction to the attack on the World Trade Center. Featured performers are Any Goldstein, soprano; Brad Carswell, baritone; the Locrian Chamber Players; and Jonathan Faiman, piano.
